Bronze

I start with my imagination and some clay!

Douglas Squarek, Robert Heys commission clay!

Making the transition from sculpting in stone to building up a clay model, the prerequisite for bronze sculpture, became necessary for me in 2000. I no longer had a dedicated home studio. Flying stone chips and the accompanying noise just were not compatible with condo living.

Douglas Squarek, Robert Heys commission reception!

Given I had to build an armature to support the weight of the clay, I had to have an basic idea of what I wanted to create. l could no longer just follow the stone.

Working with clay opens the opportuity for commissions. I enjoyed working with the organizing committee to create the Robert Heys postumous bust for Saint Mary's Univerity of Halifax in 2014. It was well received by the University and the family.

Since my bronze sculpture are Limited Editions, you will find available pieces in the SHOP!

Foundry fire!

To learn about bronze casting and the application of patina, in concert with my transition to clay, I set out to find a Foundry. I found much more. I found an unassuming team of artisans dedicated to realizing the work of fellow artists. They do it all, moulding, casting, polishing and patina.
